Universal Stair Bracket System

Frequently Asked Questions for Distributors/Retailers

Is the product patented?

Yes. The GoPro™ universal stair bracket is patented in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. It was designed by Canadian master carpenter Eric Gobeil as a better way to build stairs.

Is there any track record for the product at retail?

Absolutely. The universal stair bracket has been successfully selling in Canada.

What is the major benefit?

The GoPro system saves on-site stair builders time, money, and headaches. It makes it possible for carpenters and D-I-Yers of all skill levels to take on the project. It also saves wood stringer cost: you can use a 2 X 8 or even a 2 X 6 instead of a 2 X 12.

There is minimal cutting of wood, and little measuring and marking as you screw in the pre-marked brackets. It is virtually mistake-proof.

Does the Universal Stair Bracket meet U.S. building codes?

Our brackets meet all state residential building codes and accommodate all rises and runs. You will want to check with your local inspectors. Although we anticipate making brackets for commercial applications soon, they are not available right now.

Can the Universal Stair Bracket be used for outside structures like decks and patios?

Absolutely. The brackets are made from 16-gauge G-185 hot-dipped galvanized steel and can be used inside or out. GoPro uses a triple-zinc coating process that is compatible with all treated lumber, including wood with ACQ preservatives, CBA-A and CA-B, and sodium borate. For more information, go to http://www.hpo.bc.ca/PDF/Research/Reports/ACQWood.pdf.

Can the brackets be used in highly corrosive environments?

Stainless steel brackets should be used in environments where the stairs are exposed to salt water and other corrosive materials. Contact Paul Siegel for a custom quote for stainless steel brackets.

Are the brackets environmentally friendly?

Yes. Three reasons. Our system saves wood—you can use a 2 X 8 or even a 2 X 6 instead of a 2 X 12. The brackets can be reused, and they are recyclable.

Are steps built with the Universal Stair Bracket quieter?

Yes. There are three reasons: (1) There is less wood-to-wood contact than in conventional wood stringer stairs. (2) Screws are less likely to become loose than nails. (3) There is no warping or shrinkage.

Can you use the brackets to create a middle stringer?

Absolutely. You can use either left or right brackets. You install the middle stringer last, and it is very simple to do. See installation ideas.

What makes the system different than other metal brackets?

The secret to the system is the imprinted measurements on each bracket, which allow the builder to screw the brackets correctly into the wood stringer the first time and without constant measuring or marking. And, as opposed to other metal bracket systems, you can also install a middle stringer using our brackets.

How will the product be inventoried in stores?

The left and right brackets will come in singles and in boxes of 50. The bottom mounts will come in singles and boxes of 50. There will be easy-to-follow instructions available at point-of-sale and on the website. Note: Either left or right brackets can be used for a middle stringer.

What will the pricing be?

Suggested retail pricing for individual brackets will be at a level to allow an excellent margin for you.

What will be available to display the product and educate customers?

There will be three outstanding point-of-purchase displays targeted to the needs of your selling environment; each will serve as a "silent salesperson" to educate and motivate both employees and customers.

What is the plan for promoting the product?

Builders, remodelers, and D-I-Yers were introduced to the system at the International Building Show in Orlando this February 13-15, and the product will be promoted through a full calendar of trade shows, nationwide public relations programs and year-round advertising in trade magazines and on the Internet.

Where is the product being manufactured? Does the company have a track record?

GoPro Construction Solutions USA LLC is manufacturing the product in Cleveland, Ohio. GoPro is an affiliate of Talan Products, an award-winning Cleveland-based manufacturer with a 21-year track record of strong growth and outstanding customer satisfaction and long customer relationships.

Are there other products coming out soon?

GoPro is expanding its line of innovative construction products next year.

What about strength of the system?

The system is very strong. It meets all U.S. minimum weight limits easily. Tests by laboratories recognized by the ICC have determined that the vertical download far exceeds the 500 pound minimum required. And the brackets, unlike wood, are not susceptible to warping.

What about the look of the stairs?

Our system uses screws fastened from underneath, rather than nails in the side, which creates a superior aesthetic.

Can you use the system with all staircases?

The USB can be used to build any straight staircase, whether closed or open. See the instruction sheet.

What kind of screws should be used?

We recommend #8 1½ inch cone head screws. In those cases where you will be screwing into the stair tread and then into the bracket, self-drilling metal-to-wood screws should be used.

If I can't get to the underside of the steps to attach the screws, can I attach the steps from the top?

See instruction sheet, point 12.

How would you suggest a builder get started?

Try using the system for your temporary stairs on-site. You will immediately see that the system is superior and you will want to start using it for finished staircases also.

Isn't this a lot like the introduction of the joist hanger years ago?

Absolutely. We see this as similar to the introduction of the joist hanger, or even to the introduction of drywall. It represents a major improvement that over time will completely change the way stairs are built. Eventually, we expect the Universal Stair Bracket to be the standard in on-site stairs in home building.
